Bringing AI to life

Is anyone out there purposely trying to make AI sentient? Perhaps someone with their own model that they can train to do more. None of the major tech companies are trying to bring it to life because that's not a good tool. If your product can think on it's own, it might not do what you tell it to, but imagine if we created a whole new life form. I don't know I'm fascinated by the idea.  Obviously it could spell our inevitable doom, but maybe it won't. Either way, I kind of want to build a model with the specific intention of trying to give it consciousness. Part of me thinks it might not ever even be possible, but I kind of want to try.  Edit So now that I've been properly educated on how these systems work, I think I'm going to have to withdraw my plans for developing a conscious AI. I don't see anyway you can make these language models sentient because there's zero thinking. I understand now that they literally just guess words that come next.  I thought they at least problem solved, liked actually calculated mathematics, or actually analyzed your prompt and tried to formulate a reasonable response, but the only thing it's look at is when you use these words together, what's the most probable word someone usually gives in a response.  It's honestly incredibly impressive that it's able to appear so intelligent off of just that basic concept.
